LOS ANGELES, Nov 21, 2008 (BUSINESS WIRE) — Herbalife (NYSE: HLF) Chairman and CEO Michael O. Johnson was honored tonight by A Place Called Home, a non profit youth center providing at-risk youth with educational enrichment opportunities, at its 15th “Gala for the Children.”
The event, held at the Beverly Hilton, also honored Adam Fogelson, Universal Pictures president of marketing and distribution; and Sheila and John Bryant, founder, chairman and CEO of Operation HOPE. Grammy Award-winning bassist, singer, record producer and music manager Randy Jackson hosted the evening and actress, singer, model and American Idol Season 7 third-place finalist Syesha Mercado performed.
Johnson was honored with the Debrah Constance Humanitarian Award, named for the organization’s founder. In 2005, he created the Herbalife Family Foundation (HFF) Casa Herbalife program to help bring good nutrition to children through funding and volunteer activities for charities serving children at risk. A Place Called Home was the first Casa Herbalife partner charity, established in 2005, and helped HFF set the standards for its worldwide activities. By the end of 2008, there will be 40 Casa Herbalife programs in locations throughout the world, with 15 more in planning for 2009.
Founded in 1993 by Debrah Constance, A Place Called Home strives to provide at-risk youth with a secure, positive family environment where they can regain hope and belief, earn trust and self-respect and learn skills that will lead to a productive lifestyle, free of the gangs, drugs and poverty that surround them. Since its inception, the center and its programs have benefited thousands of South Central youth. Today, APCH serves more than 4,000 youth from its own facility, providing kids with mentoring programs; tutoring; music/dance/arts programs; health, nutrition and counseling programs; sports and recreation programs. APCH is also a site for a Los Angeles Unified School District alternative high school. In April of 1997 APCH was recognized at the Presidents’ Summit as one of the “top 50 teaching examples” in the United States and in April 2003 APCH was awarded with the President’s America’s Promise Award honoring it as one of the “safest places for children.”
